This sun-loving large adanium plant will add an evergreen patch to balconies and windows in the face of even harshest sunlight. It is an excellent choice to provide much-needed privacy from intrusive neighbours and prying eyes. This conifer, with its beautiful colored flower, with twin color requires very little care and can be pruned into almost any shape of your choice.. Low maintenance and multi-functional, this plant is perfect for all kinds of gardens and gardeners!

    • Adenium produces beautiful, large flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and bi-colored varieties.
    • The flowers are funnel-shaped, with five petals that can grow up to 2-3 inches in diameter.
    • Blooming typically occurs in spring and summer, though with proper care, Adenium may flower year-round.
  1. Trunk (Caudex):

    • The Desert Rose is famous for its swollen trunk, called a caudex, which serves as a water storage organ.
    • This thickened, bottle-like base gives the plant its distinctive look and helps it survive in arid environments.
    • The caudex is often exposed in bonsai forms of Adenium, adding to its ornamental appeal.
  2. Foliage:

    • Adenium has thick, glossy, dark green leaves that grow in a rosette-like arrangement at the tips of the branches.
    • The leaves are often sparse, allowing the focus to be on the plant's unique structure and flowers.
  3. Growth Habit:

    • Adenium is a slow-growing plant that can reach up to 3-6 feet tall in its natural habitat but remains much smaller when grown as a potted plant.
    • Its irregular, twisted branches give it a sculptural appearance, often enhancing its bonsai-style look.

Care Tips for Adenium:

  1. Light:

    • Adenium thrives in full sunlight, needing at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
    • It prefers bright, sunny locations when grown indoors, such as near a south-facing window.
  2. Watering:

    • As a succulent, Adenium is highly drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
    • Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to ensure the plant is not sitting in water.
    • In winter, when the plant enters dormancy, reduce watering significantly.
  3. Soil:

    • Adenium prefers well-draining, sandy or gritty soil, similar to cactus or succulent mixes. You can also add perlite or pumice to improve drainage.
    • Poor drainage can cause the roots to rot, so avoid heavy or clay-based soils.
  4. Temperature:

    • Adenium thrives in warm temperatures between 70-90°F (21-32°C). It does not tolerate cold and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
    • In regions with cold winters, the plant should be kept indoors or in a greenhouse.
  5. Fertilization:

    • Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) to encourage flowering and healthy growth. Reduce or stop fertilization during the dormant winter months.
  6. Pruning:

    • Prune to shape the plant and encourage a bushier growth habit. Pruning also stimulates more branches, which can lead to more flowers.
    • Trim leggy branches during the growing season, and remove any dead or damaged growth.

Propagation:

  • Adenium can be propagated through seeds or cuttings.
  • Seed propagation is slow but results in plants with a thicker caudex. Cuttings root easily but may not develop the characteristic swollen trunk as quickly as seed-grown plants.

Toxicity:

  • Adenium contains a milky sap that is toxic if ingested, so it should be kept away from pets and small children.

Common Issues:

  • Root Rot: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the plant is watered sparingly and planted in well-draining soil.
  • Pests: Adenium can be susceptible to mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to control infestations.
  • Leaf Drop: This can occur during dormancy or due to sudden environmental changes. As long as the caudex is firm, the plant is usually healthy.

Bonsai Cultivation:

  • Adenium is often grown as a bonsai due to its thick trunk, sculptural branches, and beautiful flowers. Its ability to store water and grow slowly makes it an ideal candidate for bonsai enthusiasts.

Adenium (Desert Rose) is a stunning and exotic plant that adds a touch of the desert to any home or garden. With its captivating flowers and sculptural form, it’s perfect for both novice and experienced plant collectors.
